Dental bonding has proven extremely useful for many patients with damaged or defective teeth. This process allows a dentist to repair a chipped or broken tooth. The act of bonding allows the repaired tooth to sit naturally in the mouth and look completely untouched. A qualified dental professional will be able to bond material in such a way that the tooth retains a natural shape and looks healthy and normal, even when compared to the patient’s undamaged teeth. Along with being a practical solution, dental bonding is also an art form to the patients who have had their teeth repaired using this method.

How Does Dental Bonding Work?

Simply stated, dental bonding is the act of applying material to a damaged tooth to rebuild it or reshape it so that it looks undamaged. The dentist will use bonding which is an adhesive material.  A natural looking resin is used to mimic the patient’s real tooth color. This resin, which is a strong plastic material, is sensitive to certain kinds of lighting. After applying the resin, the dentist will apply the required light which makes the material harden quickly. The hardening process causes the resin to bond with the patient’s natural tooth.  The end result is a repaired tooth that looks completely unharmed and normal.

Expanding the Use of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding has grown significantly in its popularity and regular use. Along with repairing chipped teeth, this technique can be applied to teeth with excessive gaps. A dentist can apply resin to fill teeth out which closes gaps and makes the patient’s smile look fuller. The founder and president of the American Society for Dental Aesthetics Irwin Smigel is credited with encouraging the use of dental bonding to close tooth gaps. Dental bonding is also used to lengthen teeth to create the same effect.

Dental Bonding without Damage

Dental bonding offers many appealing benefits to patients. Along with offering a way to fill out gaps and reshape teeth, this process can also be used to whiten teeth that have yellow or brown discoloration. The dental bonding material will conceal unsightly stains and discoloration to give a tooth a healthy white appearance.  Along with its practical uses, dental bonding is an excellent choice for cosmetic dental repairs.
